For many school children in Tanzania, the journey to and from school is difficult and potentially dangerous. To get to school, many children have to walk along and cross busy roads, with the risk of being hit by a car, motorcycle or other vehicle. Other challenges include sexual harassment and poor or damaged infrastructure, especially during the rainy season. The risks that children face contribute to relatively high rates of truancy and school drop-out.
Amend’s Safe Roads to Primary and Secondary Schools in Tanzania is funded by the World Bank, and is part of the government’s wider Safe School Program.
The project involves undertaking assessments at 30 schools in five regions across the country, to understand the risks that children face. Based on this understanding, two packages of materials and recommendations will be developed and piloted – a Communications Package targeted at school students and other road users and members of the community with the aim of changing behaviour, and an Advocacy Package targeted at government and other stakeholders with the aim of influencing policy.
This project is of particular interest as it brings together the education sector and the infrastructure development sector.
